This website
is designed to illustrate my philosophy about children as learners, the role
that families and society play in education, what encompasses curriculum,
pedagogy and assessment, my roles and responsibilities as an educator and a
significant dilemma which I am faced with on a daily basis.
I am a student teacher who is about to take up my position as a member of the teaching profession. Over the past 12 years through study and working within the Early Childhood Industry, I have come to understand that the work of a teacher is that of a complex and challenging nature where teachers are faced with a vast array of dilemmas. Teaching in the 21st Century has evolved dramatically and is fast-paced with a post-modern approach. We live in an increasingly globalising world which is changing and evolving continually.
While considering my beliefs about teaching and learning, I am inspired by the concepts which surround Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (1964) and directed by Mel Stuart (1971). This film was a clear indication of how children were ‘schooled’ in the industrial era. The focus of these times was the teacher as the knowledge expert who taught one set way, mainly learning specific sets of skills, to gain positions within the types of factories that were depicted in the film.
I will be making references to this film throughout my philosophy as Willy Wonka opens parents, children and the viewers’ eyes to a ‘world of pure imagination’ where the sky is the limit and every idea is achievable. I believe that when applying these concepts to today’s education contexts, colour and imagination completely inspire our young learners; we are opening the door to a world of possibilities where higher order thinking skills are crucial for children to attain jobs that haven’t yet been created.
